Week 6 @ St Goretti's HSS

 15th August 2022

We were instructed to arrive at school by 7.30 AM to dress up the students for various events before the flag hoisting at 8.30 AM. There were students dressed up representing different states for the program 'Unity in Diversity' and students dressed as freedom fighters for the program 'With the Leaders'. Most of them showed up late at 8 AM and all of us our efforts with the timely help from the parents made it possible to start the rally on time. After the rally, students assembled at the auditorium for the scheduled program. Dr Saju of the Chemistry department of Mar Ivanios College was the chief guest. All the planned programs went well, even though it was planned at the last moment.

16th August 2022

It has been a while since we have come to school on a Tuesday. HM has allowed us a few more days to complete our pending work. This news came as a relief as I had a few more problems to finish at 9C. Also, we have our conscientization program pending to be done. As usual, I had classes at 9C and 8D. I have one more section to complete at 8D before their Onam exams. Students seem to be showing more interest in geometry than algebra.

Since most of the teachers had gone to a funeral, we were given substitution periods in various classes. I had substitution at 5D. Students were asked to introduce themselves and tell their ambitions. Most of them wanted to be police officers and wanted to join the military. One that caught my attention was a student's wish to become an Archaeologist which is a word you rarely hear from a 10-year-old. Little Vignesh had to explain who an archaeologist was and I must say he did not randomly pick up that word but had done enough homework to know what the job entails. I had asked students to draw a pattern or anything using geometric shapes and students were overflowing with ideas. I'm glad that I got that period at 5D.

I got to teach at 9A for two periods. I introduced the chapter 'New Numbers' and did a few problems. Gopika and Sreevineetha accompanied me to help me manage the class. Also, I finally got time to do my project work at 9E today.  Students were very cooperative and interactive which made the work more fun.

17th August 2022

Today we conducted our Conscientization program at 9C. The idea behind the topic was given by Sr. Jeena. In a limited time, we pulled off a short program on 'Stress Management'. I completed all of my LP's today.

19th August 2022

It's almost the weekend. Today's schedule was packed. I had classes at 8D, 9C and 10A. The class at 10A was totally unexpected and I had to make quick preparations. 10A were doing problems from 'Second Degree Equations' which was a comparatively easier topic to prepare. Also, I took the diagnostic test at 8D today.

Day 31 of Online Classes

Today was the logo release and inauguration of the social science association. They have chosen the name 'ഐക്യ ' which means to become one. The name is a good reminder for these times where the world is divided in the name of religion, caste, race, resources etc.  The chief guest was Arya Rajendran, the  mayor  of Trivandrum and is the youngest (22 years) to hold that position. Felicitations were expressed by singers Mrs. Veena Haridas and Mr. Ravishankar. The surprising fact was that there were almost 100 participants throughout the program. The effort taken by each and everyone of the class (as well as from other classes) could be seen.

Coastline Paradox

Ever wondered how the perimeter of irregular surfaces (like coastlines, borders of a fern leaf) are measured and compared?  For example, let us consider a coastline, you can see that as we zoom in on the picture more irregularities pop up, there is no stage of zooming in where we'll finally reach a straight line. So, if I had to measure the coastline using a 15 cm scale, it'd obviously ignore the small irregularities which lie beyond the scope of a 15 cm scale. If I measure the coastline using a 5 cm scale, then it would accommodate comparatively more irregularities, as a result, the length of the same coastline will be more in this case. This means as the precision of the scale increases the length of the coastline increases. Comparison of coastlines between different regions becomes difficult due to this dilemma. This is known as the 'Coastline Paradox' or 'Richardson effect' and originally the problem was framed as, "How Long is the Coast of Britain?...

Prime Numbers in Nature

Prime numbers are one of the easiest concepts to understand and learn in Maths. But some of the complex problems in Maths belong to this branch. Never would have imagined an application of prime numbers in nature. Thanks to the book 'Weird Maths: At The Edge of Infinity and Beyond' which introduced me to this along with other weird applications of Maths. There's a particular species type of cicadas found in the US called the Magicicada or the 'periodical cicadas' who stay in their larva for 13 or 17 years. Imagine staying inside for over a decade with no connection to the outside world and coming out in the year 2021. People wearing masks walking all around you, smartphones, oh, the shock!🤯 It is the primality of these numbers which interest the mathematicians. The reasons are quite interesting. As the lifecycle of the prey changes, the population cycle (pattern in the population for a period of time) of their predators also vary due to the change in the availabil...
