The Story of Probability

Why was the concept of probability invented? This is the question we are going to answer through this post. Probability was discovered to answer a gambling problem. The original problem is a bit complicated but the simplified version goes like this.

Suppose two persons, A and B are playing a game of coin toss where the person who gets their toss thrice first wins a pot of gold.

If the score is 2-1 and the game has to be stopped due to some unforeseeable reasons then how would the pot of gold be divided?  By logic, since A is leading with 2 points and B only has 1 point, the pot can be divided in the ratio of 2:1. This seems like a good argument but this fails when the score is 0-1. In this case, it seems unfair to give the pot of gold to B based on the previous argument when A may have a chance to win in the upcoming tosses. But if one were to calculate the probability of winning the game of the two players, then it would give us a foolproof explanation as to how to divide the pot of gold fairly. In this case, the probability of A and B winning the game is 11/16 and 5/16 respectively. So, dividing the pot of gold between A and B in the ratio of 11: 5 would be the aptest method. But you may be surprised to see that B who is leading has a lower probability of winning compared to A, who is yet to score a point

This idea of  'Probability' was put forward by mathematicians Blaise Pascal and Pierre De Fermat. Since its discovery probability has played a major role in every aspect of our lives.

Prime Numbers in Nature

Prime numbers are one of the easiest concepts to understand and learn in Maths. But some of the complex problems in Maths belong to this branch. Never would have imagined an application of prime numbers in nature. Thanks to the book 'Weird Maths: At The Edge of Infinity and Beyond' which introduced me to this along with other weird applications of Maths. There's a particular species type of cicadas found in the US called the Magicicada or the 'periodical cicadas' who stay in their larva for 13 or 17 years. Imagine staying inside for over a decade with no connection to the outside world and coming out in the year 2021. People wearing masks walking all around you, smartphones, oh, the shock!🤯 It is the primality of these numbers which interest the mathematicians. The reasons are quite interesting. As the lifecycle of the prey changes, the population cycle (pattern in the population for a period of time) of their predators also vary due to the change in the availabil...

Second Phase of Intense Teaching Practice

13th July 2022 The first day was nerve-wracking. It might be the fact that all of us haven't taught a large group of students. During the first internship, most of us had only 8-10 students in a class due to COVID and the idea of teaching a room filled with 50 students seemed to be a challenge. But after meeting the students, eveything seemed to go smooth and it calmed the nerves. The duties were assigned to us by our leader Sreevineetha. I had evening duty, along with Jis and Georgia. We had to make sure that every student gets picked up from school. 14th July 2022 Everyday the teachers have a prayer at the HM's office at 9.10 am. I had lunch duty along with Rubeena, Deepa and Jis.  Today I had to go for substitution at 9A, 10 A, 10 C and 9C. 9A which is an all- boys class with 56 students was difficult to manage. They settled down after I managed to divide them into groups and give them equation related activity. Rubeena and I had gone for substitution at 10 A (all-boys) and ...

Another Week Ends in Lightning Speed

Weeks are getting over in a blink of an eye! This week we had a few submissions. Starting with discussion lesson olans, followed by Joju sir's note preparation and finally Reading and Reflection. This week we were supposed to begin our presentations but we needed more time to prepare. So, Joju sir continued with Bloom's taxonomy. In Ancy ma'am's class, English, Social Science and us presented our discussion reports on education commissions. In Giby ma'am class we learnt about 'Forgetting theory'. Finally, in Maya ma'am's class we selectedvour practicum topics and completed our discussion on Buddhism and moved onto British education in India. Looks like our classes will restadt from Oct 4th, don't know how everything is going to come about.
