A Small Shift to Virtual Classes

Due to some unforeseen reasons, we had online classes during this week.

During the week Ancy ma'am taught the different functionalities of Google Meet and also gave a demonstration on how to create a google form. Then we learnt about Piaget's theory of cognitive development.

Joju sir, gave a short presentation on the 'Hero in You' where he introduced us to many personalities who rose from the ashes to greater heights. There was also an interactive session on the advantages and disadvantages of technology.

In our optional hours we discussed about the qualities of a good teacher. Moreover, Deepthi ma'am shared the different roles a teacher plays in a student's life. Out of  all the roles, a teacher's role as a scaffolder drew my attention. Just like a scaffolder provides support to a concrete formwork until the cement is set, a teacher provides the required support to a child until its time for the child to do the task on his own. For me, this is the most important role a teacher can take.

In this week Maya ma'am discussed on how great thinkers and philosophers interpret education. As we compare these definitions, every definition stresses on the fact that education is not mere knowledge stuffing. But in this world when everyone is running behind university ranks and all India ranks, is there anything happening other than knowledge stuffing in schools and colleges?

We had an online demonstration of Pranayama, during our PE class, who knew this was possible before the pandemic. Now with online tutorials for each and everything one has no one to blame for one's ignorance. Hope we'll be back to our classrooms by Monday.

Prime Numbers in Nature

Prime numbers are one of the easiest concepts to understand and learn in Maths. But some of the complex problems in Maths belong to this branch. Never would have imagined an application of prime numbers in nature. Thanks to the book 'Weird Maths: At The Edge of Infinity and Beyond' which introduced me to this along with other weird applications of Maths. There's a particular species type of cicadas found in the US called the Magicicada or the 'periodical cicadas' who stay in their larva for 13 or 17 years. Imagine staying inside for over a decade with no connection to the outside world and coming out in the year 2021. People wearing masks walking all around you, smartphones, oh, the shock!🤯 It is the primality of these numbers which interest the mathematicians. The reasons are quite interesting. As the lifecycle of the prey changes, the population cycle (pattern in the population for a period of time) of their predators also vary due to the change in the availabil...

Week 5 @ St Goretti's HSS

8th August 2022 We are back at St Goretti's after a short weekend. Today, Joju sir visited us for class observation and gave us instructions on how to control mass answering in class. Also, we are supposed to complete all our portions by this week, so that teachers can conduct revisions for the students for the Onam exam. As usual, I had classes at 8D and 9C 10th August 2022 Tuesday was a holiday due to Muharram. Today I taught multiplication of surds using the constructivist model. I was worried about its execution but the class went quite smoothly. At 8D, I'm almost done with the portions and I'll be conducting the achievement test on Friday. 11th August 2022 Today, we were given the responsibility of conducting the Independence Day programs at the school on the 15th of August. The teachers at the school gave some ideas on what the programs could be and suggested names of the students who would be apt for each program. We had planned 7 programs in total and 14 of us were...

Week 4@ St Goretti's HSS

1st August 2022  We are back to St. Gorett's for week 4 of INTENSE TEACHING PRACTICE. Today Benedict sir and Joju visited us. Joju sir observed some of our classes while benedict sir checked our records and gave us necessary corrections. Those who were free guided Joju sir to the classes that were to be observed. Later, Joju sir shared some of the common mistakes we tend to make while teaching.     4th August 2022  We had an unexpected holiday for 2 days due to heavy rains. These holidays will further delay the portion completion. We were asked to complete all our Lesson Plans by 15th August, which seems to be farfetched with these unanticipated breaks. Today Deepthi ma'am had come for observation. As usual, I had classes at 9C and 8D. 5th August 2022 We made plans to conduct extra classes for students of 8B,8C,8D,9B,9C and 9D on Saturday to complete the portions. Also, I utilized my free period to observe Sr Jeena's class at 8D. I've previously observed Sr Jeena's...
